What is it you would love to CREATE in your business? And WHY?
What is it you would love to create in your business? What is it you really want? And why is this important to you?
These questions often form the basis of what I ask business owners when I work with them. And often more than once over a period of time. It is amazing just how much you uncover from their responses. It really is powerful.
Why do I ask these?
Personal + Business Vision
Well, every business owner should start out with what they want their ideal business to look like in the future. Their vision. And remember, it’s not just business vision but personal vision. Often businesses get preoccupied with the short term, so these types of questions allow them to also keep focused on the bigger picture – hence why I return to this question of vision, time and time again. And often, once they have told me what they want to create for their business, I want them to think even bigger, and I ask them what else they want.
And then what they really want.
The Why
And it is never really just about the business. Personal vision comes before business vision. It is first about them as individuals. So, I am ultimately searching for their ‘Why’. I really want them to connect powerfully with why they are setting up in business, their key motivation behind it and what really matters most in their life. Drawing out there why is essential.
If we can tap into our ‘why’ it makes the ‘how’ so much easier. It is what the writer, Simon Sinek, makes clear in his famous book, ‘Start with Why’.
As Simon states: ‘The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe.’ By this route, you end up with allies across sectors. After all, the cut is not about what, but that deeper question, why? This question is crucial to address. And a powerful why will help you wake up each morning more motivated and readier to get through the challenges and struggles we all experience in business’
I can relate to that from my early years when I struggled and had not worked out my why. But having now found my why – of wanting to help and serve individuals, students and business owners – it has made a big difference to ‘how’ I run my business. It makes a huge difference in how you approach your business.
Possibility and potential
While asking these questions, I am also looking for the ‘possibility’ and ‘potential’ that exists in the business and the business owner. I love seeing the often-hidden potential people bring to the equation. I call it the hidden potential or the glimpse of genius we have in all of us. I want to draw that glimpse of potential out of from them, I see it and they can too. Of course, it differs from person to person, but everyone has something uniquely special which they can bring into their business. And when they also connect with their why, it can make all the difference in building the successful business they really want to create.
So, let me ask you:
What is it you would love to do?
What is your Why?
What is your own glimpse of genius?
Importantly, answer it, then go and do it.
